The update on August 8 made over the 'Nearby' system and introduced 'Sightings' system in Pokemon Go. Niantic put a message on their website as the following.
Pokémon GO has been updated to version 0.33.0 for Android and 1.3.0 for iOS devices. Below are some release notes and comments from our development team.
We’re currently testing a variation of the “Nearby Pokémon” feature with a subset of users. During this period you may see some variation in the nearby Pokémon UI.

1. Renewed 'NEARBY'
The Pokemon tracking function was renewed due to the update on August 8. The nearby system shows wild Pokemon and PokeStops where the Pokemon can be found. The sightings function is below the nearby.
The player taps the icon of Zubat.
2. The PokeStop pointed with footprints
After tapping the Zubat on the nearby screen, the PokeStops where the player can find the Pokemon is marked with footprints on the map view.
3. Tracking the another Pokemon
Now the player taps the icon of Kingler. The map screen shows the another PokeStop marked with footprints. The player can find the Kingler at the PokeStop.
