Because of great overall stats, especially in HP, combined with his powerful moveset, Snorlax is one of the most common Pokemon you will see defending Gyms.

Tips and strategies

Effective attack types

Snorlax's only weakness are Fighting-type attacks, making him quite annoying to deal with, since he has a lot of HP and there are not that many good Fighting-type Pokemon. Luckily, he is also only resistant against Ghost-type attacks, which are also not that common. Knowing this, it might be better to bring a strong Pokemon to do neutral damage against him, than to bring a weak Fighting-type Pokemon that will do super effective damage against him.

Choosing Pokemon

Snorlax has a wide variety of attacks so choosing a Pokemon that would resist every attack in Snorlax's moveset might prove to be difficult. Snorlax usually has Zen headbutt as his normal attack, making th use of Fighting-type Pokemon not a very good choice. Then there's Earthquake, which is not only super effective against many Pokemon, it also deals huge damage with a neutral type effectiveness.

Machamp	[Counter / Dynamic Punch] Great HP and attack stat. Fighting-type attacks are super effective against Snorlax. Using [Karate Chop] as a normal attack would also work. Using [Close Combat] as a charged attack would also work.
Donphan	[Counter / Earthquake] High CP. High HP and Defense stats. Neutral to all of Snorlax's attacks.
Ursaring	[Counter / Close Combat] High CP. Neutral against most of Snorlax's attacks and resistant to [Lick].

Pokemon	[Moveset] Explanation
Pinsir	[Rock Smash / Close Combat] High CP. Fighting-type attacks are super effective against Snorlax. Resistant against Ground-type attacks like Earthquake.
Primeape	[Counter / Close Combat] High attack stat. Fighting-type attacks are super effective. Low CP and weak against [Zen Headbutt], meaning you have to dodge attacks.
Exeggutor	[Extrasensory / Solar Beam] Great attack stat. [Solar Beam] does excellent damage. Relatively easy to obtain and power up. Watch out for Snorlax's [Lick]
Poliwrath	[Rock Smash / Dynamic Punch] Resistant against [Heavy Slam]. Fighting-type attacks are super effective against Snorlax. Low CP means you will still have to dodge Snorlax's attacks.
Ursaring	[Counter / Close Combat] High CP. Neutral against most of Snorlax's attacks and resistant to one.
Flareon	[Fire Spin / Overheat] Great attack stat. [Overheat] does excellent damage.
Espeon	[Confusion / Future Sight] Great attack stat. Weak HP stat means you will have to dodge attacks.
Machamp	[Counter / Dynamic Punch] Great HP and attack stat. Fighting-type attacks are super effective against Snorlax. Be careful of Zen Headbutt.
Scizor	[Bullet Punch / Iron Head] High attack stat. Resistant against most of Snorlax's attacks.
Tyranitar	[Bite / Stone Edge] Outstanding overall stat that rival even Legendary Pokemon. [Stone Edge] does excellent damage. Resistant against Normal-type attacks. Watch out for [Earthquake].
Dragonite	[Dragon Tail / Hyper Beam] Outstanding overall stat that rival even Legendary Pokemon. Resistant to [Earthquake].
Alakazam	[Confusion / Future Sight] Oustanding attack stat. [Future Sight] does excellent damage. Weak HP and defense means you will have to dodge attacks.
